INTRODUCTION

Between Adventureland and Critter Country there's a little corner of New Orleans. New Orleans Square incorporates many of the distinctive architectural features of the French Quarter: narrow side streets with small shops, fountains in quiet courtyards, and rows of colorful townhouses with their lacy wrought iron railings. Hanging flower baskets or Mardi Gras beads decorate many of the railings in this picturesque area.

Street performers like mimes, jazz bands and other musical groups provide live entertainment and even toss Mardi Gras beads to the audience. In the quiet back streets artists create custom portraits, and the many restaurants offer Creole specialties like fritters and gumbo. Two of Disneyland's signature attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion, are located here, as is the Blue Bayou restaurant, where you can watch the fireflies and listen to the sounds of the bayou as you dine.

ATTRACTIONS and ENTERTAINMENT

Disneyland Railroad, New Orleans Square Station - Take a train ride through Splash Mountain and see the sights along the Rivers of America on your way to the Toontown Station.

Disney Gallery - Located above Pirates of the Caribbean, recently renovated, featuring a Disneyland 50th Anniversary exhibit.

Haunted Mansion - Board your "doom buggy" for a spooky ride through a southern mansion filled with 999 Happy Haunts. Beware of hitchhiking ghosts!

Pirates of the Caribbean - Yo ho, yo ho...On this boat ride audio-animatronic pirates pillage and sing and swashbuckle their way around the Caribbean.

TOURING TIPS

On nights when Fantasmic! is running, the New Orleans Square area gets quite crowded, and when Fantasmic! is over it's difficult to even move.

If you want to dine at the Blue Bayou or Cafe Orleans, you can make Priority Seating in advance by calling Disney Dining at 714-781-DINE. Same day reservations can be made at the restaurant's podium - go soon after park opening to make sure you'll be able to get in.

INTERESTING FACTS

New Orleans Square was the first new "land" added to Disneyland, and was dedicated on July 24, 1966. Walt Disney was very involved in the design and implementation.

The area now occupied by the Disney Gallery was originally intended to be a private apartment for the Disney family, much larger than the one above the Main Street Fire Station.

The Frontierland railroad station was re-themed and renamed when New Orleans Square opened. The sound of the telegraph heard at the train station is a portion of Walt Disney's speech on Disneyland's opening day - in Morse code.

Disneyland's steam trains sometimes have a longer stop at the New Orleans Square Station since that's where they refill them with water.
