Walt Disney World Golf Classic, Oct. 17-20

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- A field of 144 top PGA TOUR players heads to the tees at Walt Disney World Resort on Oct. 17-20 for the 2002 Walt Disney World Golf Classic. The Classic, now in its 32nd year, boasts a $3.7 million purse -- its biggest ever -- including a record winner’s share of $666,000.

Tiger Woods is expected to return to the Classic for the seventh consecutive year to vie for the championship title he won in 1996 and 1999. Woods, the world’s No. 1 player, finished in a five-way tie for 16th in the 2001 Classic as he watched Jose Coceres of Argentina edge Davis Love III for the victory.

Coceres will return to Disney to defend his title. Other players to watch are expected to include PGA Championship winner Rich Beem and U.S. Ryder Cup team members Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, Love and Scott Verplank. Other names of note are Chris DiMarco, rookie of the year candidate Peter Lonard, Bernhard Langer, Jerry Kelly and Fred Funk.

Play will be on Disney’s Magnolia and Palm courses, both Joe Lee designs. The 7,201-yard Magnolia has hosted the Classic for 31 years, tying for 10th longest continuing streak as host to a PGA TOUR event. The adjacent Palm course plays 6,957 yards and has been used continuously on the TOUR since 1972, placing it 12th on the same list.

Admission tickets are available in advance of the Classic. Daily Tickets (Thursday or Friday $15; Saturday $20; Sunday $25) and Weekly Badges ($50) can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling 407/839-3900. Fairway Club (weekend $125; four rounds $175) and other hospitality packages are available by calling 407/939-4263.
