Back in 2016, Harry Potter fans sadly lost the incredibly talented Alan Rickman, and in 2021 Helen McCrory passed away as well. Other actors from the Harry Potter films have unfortunately passed away over the years, and it is with a heavy heart that we share that Robbie Coltrane, the actor who played Hagrid, has also passed away.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie Coltrane, who was a Scottish-born comic and actor, has died at the age of 72. The news was shared with them by his agency, WME.

Coltrane graduated from the Glasgow Art School, and continued his schooling at Moray House College of Education. After his attempts at becoming an artist didn’t work out, he began his acting career in comedy and theater. He was actually given the name Anthony Robert McMillan when born but changed his last name to Coltrane as he turned to acting. That last name was chosen in honor of a jazz legend John Coltrane.

Robbie Coltrane ultimately appeared in two James Bond films, was a “mainstay on British TV screens,” played a key role in the Cracker series, and played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter franchise.

Coltrane actually wrote an autobiography titled Coltrane in a Cadillac, which you can pick up if you’d like to learn more about his passion for vintage cars.
