Marvel Studios is notoriously guarded when it comes to secret plot points of their blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. They’re known to keep productions under ultra levels of secrecy, down to giving actors only their required script pages and having all involved signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). However, the next Captain America film (one they NEED to be a hit) may have had its secrets exposed EARLY…by a Happy Meal?

The new McDonald’s Happy Meal toys are tied to next year’s Captain America: Brave New World film.  Sounds a little early, right? While numerous toys are featured, including two versions of Sam Wilson as Captain America, who’ll be making his cinematic debut in this film after taking on the mantle on Disney+’s Falcon & the Winter Soldier, one Happy Meal toy stuck out to Marvel fans like a sore thumb: Red Hulk.

In the source material Marvel Comics, the monstrous Red Hulk is the alter-ego of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Ross has been a presence in the MCU for years, being portrayed across several films by the late William Hurt.

After Hurt passed away in 2022, the role was recast with Harrison Ford for Brave New World. Many fans believed that recasting Hurt’s character, especially with an actor of Ford’s status, was a sign that the character and his alter-ego would be playing a major role in the sequel.

Thanks to the lead time that goes into their production, there have been numerous instances of toy releases inadvertently spoiling a film. In recent years, both Marvel and DC superhero films have seen “surprises” revealed through everything from Funko Pops to action figures to LEGO sets.

Perhaps the most infamous example came way back in 1990 when the towline tied to the Disney live-action adaptation of Dick Tracy spoiled that Madonna’s character Breathless Mahoney was actually the film’s villain, The Blank. The figure was initially pulled from stores to protect the surprise, and thanks to the film’s box office failure was never put back into wide circulation, becoming one of toy collecting’s holy grails.

We can only wait and see if Thunderbolt Ross will really turn into Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World or if this is a Marvel bait-and-switch. Stay tuned to AllEars for more Marvel news.
