Decoding Disney World’s Huge EPCOT Ride Transformation Plans

EPCOT has seen some pretty major changes in the past few years!

Spaceship Earth

From additions like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana to the all-new World Celebration and CommuniCore Hall & Plaza areas, there’s so much to see and explore. But Disney’s not done yet! Another EPCOT ride is getting a major overhaul, and we’ve got the details about what changes could be coming.

Test Track Is Getting Reimagined!

It was announced last year that Test Track in World Discovery is getting a big makeover. The ride will be closing on June 17th, 2024 to make way for these major changes.

Concept art shared shows a complete update to the exterior of the ride, as well as an overhaul on the inside. It’s possible we could see a complete retheme! However, this isn’t the first time this particular ride has gone back to the drawing board.

When EPCOT first opened, this spot was home to World of Motion. Then, in 1999, Test Track took over. In 2012, the ride got yet another update, giving us the version we have now — sponsored by Chevrolet — where riders hop in a “test” vehicle and weather various road conditions to see how their sim cars stand up.

What’s Changing?

So what’s changing with Test Track? Well, that’s the question of the year! Disney hasn’t revealed much yet, but based on the concept art, it looks as though the new vibe is going to be sleeker and more modern, with lots of blues and silvers.

We’re noticing a lot of LED lights throughout the new look and Disney has shared that the new ride will feature nods to its predecessor, World of Motion. We can’t wait!

So far, Disney has only shared one piece of concept art from inside the ride, and it looks very similar to the forest scene that’s a part of the attraction currently. We’ll be interested to learn more about the storyline.

How It Could Be Similar to World of Motion

The first similarity we notice when comparing to World of Motion is that the ride vehicle looks very close to the design of the old World of Motion vehicles. World of Motion was an omnimover attraction that took you on a journey through the history of transportation.

If Disney plans to pay homage to World of Motion, it’s possible that Test Track could go back to more of a “storyline” type ride instead of different disconnected scenes. Maybe we’ll even get something a bit more educational or history-related to focus on EPCOT’s theme of “edutainment.”

Test Track exit area

Disney hasn’t revealed anything about the story of the ride yet, but we’ll be on the lookout for details. The permit for construction on the ride expires in February 2025, so hopefully everything will be complete before then.
