2 Events Created the Perfect Storm in Disney World

It’s a BUSY week in Disney World.

Monday was a holiday (President’s Day), which may have led some folks to make a trip to Disney World and perhaps extend their stay a few days — what’s a few more days off, right? On top of all of that, the runDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend has kicked off. And at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster has closed for a lengthy refurbishment, forcing guests to spill into other ride lines. These two events happening right after the other have created the “perfect storm” in Disney World.

Let’s just say, we’ve seen some serious crowds in the parks this week, and for the first time ever, we’ve seen Genie+ sell out. And with big crowds can come something you’d probably rather not see…long wait times.

So just how high are those wait times? Well, on February 23rd, one ride had a wait time of FOUR hours (yes, it was Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Disney’s Hollywood Studios). But that wasn’t the only ride with high wait times — Peter Pan’s Flight had a wait of two hours, Avatar Flight of Passage had a wait of 2-1/2 hours, and other rides were inching up there with waits above 100 minutes.

Now, that’s not to say that all waits were long, but it’s something to keep an eye out for.

So what can you do if you’re in Disney World this weekend (or during any holiday week) and want to avoid long waits? One option is to purchase Genie+ (which can cost more based on higher demand) to access Lightning Lanes for rides. But you’ll want to buy it FAST so you can secure your purchase before it potentially sells out. Genie+ typically goes on sale around midnight on the day of your trip.

You may also want to purchase the Individual Lightning Lane option for those rides that aren’t included with Genie+. Yes, it can get expensive, especially if you have several people in your party, but it could help you save valuable time not waiting in those long standby lines.
