Disney Execs Tease Possibility of ‘Coco’ Land in Theme Parks

Disney sure knows how to get people talking.

Coco announcements at D23

At Destination D23, they made a ton of announcements and also teased a ton of potential new lands in the theme parks which we’ve already talked about. It was later announced that Disney plans to spend $60 billion on the Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products division over the next decade, and we’ve got a hint about what might be coming!

Disney recently shared that they plan on investing $60 billion into Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products (DPEP) over the next 10 years. Not only that, but there are also 1,000 acres of land waiting to be developed across the theme parks.

Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products, previously shared that the parks business has managed to recover well following the global pandemic.

Disney shared in a statement that they “will explore even more characters and franchises, including some that haven’t been leveraged extensively to date, as it embarks on a new period of significant growth domestically and internationally in its parks and resorts.”

He didn’t indicate just what the $60 billion would be put toward, but in typical Disney fashion, D’Amaro mentioned multiple IP franchises that they could bring to the parks.

“In terms of bringing the latest Disney-Marvel-Pixar intellectual property to the parks, we haven’t come close to scratching the surface. And we have learned that incorporating Disney I.P. increases the return on investment significantly,” D’Amaro said.

He continued, “We have a wealth of untapped stories to bring to life across our business,” said D’Amaro. “Frozen, one of the most successful and popular animated franchises of all time, could have a presence at the Disneyland Resort. Wakanda has yet to be brought to life. The world of Coco is just waiting to be explored. There’s a lot of storytelling opportunity.”

Wait — so you’re telling us that the world of Coco could eventually come to Disneyland? Because that’s essentially what we’re hearing. Of course, nothing further was shared about a potential Coco-themed land in Disneyland or Disney World, but we do know that this isn’t the first time a Coco land has been mentioned — at least for Disney World.

At the 2022 D23 Expo, Disney teased the potential for a Coco land in Magic Kingdom, even going so far as to show new concept art with areas that look like the town square from the movie. We haven’t really heard anything about it since, but maybe this is a sign that something could be in the works.

Right now, there are expansions planned for both Disney World and Disneyland. At Disney World, Dinoland, USA is set to be rethemed and a project is in the works to expand Magic Kingdom beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

And in Disneyland, executives are hoping to get approval for the Disneyland Forward project. The plans would let Disney expand the parks into unused space and rearrange some of the already existing structures.
